The CineFiles – Ep. 25
By Brian Eggert | May 8, 2026
Dear readers,
On the latest episode of The CineFiles, journalist Chris Hrapsky, critic Jamie Rogers, and I sit down to discuss three new releases and a masterful 1950s melodrama.
We lead off with a review of Andy Serkis’ Animal Farm, a new animated adaptation of George Orwell’s book. Featuring an ensemble voice cast (Seth Rogen, Gaten Matarazzo, Kieran Culkin, and Glenn Close), this version aims for a family-friendly tone and sacrifices its edge.
Next, we share our thoughts on Apex, a new Netflix original movie. This cat-and-mouse yarn stars Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton in a high-stakes survival thriller. We also dive into the merits and controversy of Michael, the new Michael Jackson biopic that has been dominating the box office recently.
For this week’s CineGift, I selected Douglas Sirk’s Written on the Wind (1956), a salacious Technicolor-soaked drama. Looking ahead to our next episode, Jamie picked the gross cult flick The Greasy Strangler (2016).
