The CineFiles – Ep. 8

By Brian Eggert | August 23, 2025

Dear readers,

On the new episode of The CineFiles, critic Jamie Rogers (The Playlist) and I cover two new releases and an all-time classic. (Chris Hrapsky is on vacation this week.)

First up, we share our enthusiasm for Spike Lee’s latest, Highest 2 Lowest, starring Denzel Washington and Jeffrey Wright, as an essential film to see in the theater during its limited release, before it arrives on AppleTV+ on September 5. It’s a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low (1963), which we talked about a few episodes ago.

Next, we discussed Zach Cregger’s Weapons, the buzzy new horror movie that continues to be a box-office hit. Jamie liked it more than I did, but we both agree it’s not to be missed.

Finally, Jamie and I shared our love of Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator (1940), my “CineGift” for this episode. It’s a defiantly independent production, a vital statement against fascism, and a passionate call for humanity in the face of intolerance.
