The CineFiles – Ep. 11

Dear readers,

Episode 11 of The CineFiles brings a trio of powerful new films that are bold, challenging, and bound to stir conversation. With Jamie Rogers off this week, Chris Hrapsky and I dive into stories that test the limits of family, truth, and global stability.

We start with If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Mary Bronstein’s darkly funny meditation on motherhood and identity. It features a fearless turn by Rose Byrne and stands among A24’s best releases of the year. It opens everywhere on October 24.

Next, Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt delivers a provocative drama led by Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield, and Michael Stuhlbarg—it’s part #MeToo drama, part mystery, part character study, and part investigation of truth. It’s now in theaters.

Finally, we tackle Kathryn Bigelow’s A House of Dynamite, a harrowing nuclear thriller that imagines just how fragile global peace really is, starring Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, and Anthony Ramos. It arrives on Netflix on October 24.

For CineGift, I recommended the Duplass brothers’ Baghead (2008), a scrappy, inventive blend of comedy and horror that helped define the “mumblecore” era. And be sure to stay tuned for a tease of Jamie’s pick for next time.
